We Had Our 1st Call to Poison Control This Weekend!

We were outside all afternoon on Sunday, it was beautiful out so we decided to go play and also clean up the yard for the winter. Put all the toys and furniture away and clean up the leaves. So it's around dinner time and I go in to use the bathroom while Jon (hubby) and Jacob (2 year old) are still outside. All of the sudden in bursts Jon with Jacob telling me he just ate a Poke Berry! Jon came over to see him trying to scrape it off his tongue. So here I am in a panic trying to wash his mouth out, ya like that's gonna do much! He was probably wondering what the heck was wrong with us! lol.

If you are not familiar with how this poisonous berry can affect us here it is straight from wikipedia: "The eating of nonfatal quantities of poke, perhaps of the shoots, may cause retching or vomiting after two hours or more. These signs may be followed by dyspnea, perspiration, spasms, severe purging, prostration, tremors, watery diarrhea (often bloody) and, sometimes, convulsions. If a fatal quantity is eaten, perhaps including roots, the above signs are followed by paralysis of the respiratory organs and other narcotic effects, culminating in the death of the poisoned person."

So Jon called Poison Control and told them what happened. Luckily she assured us that he would have to consume 20 or more berries for it to become dangerous or fatal. We knew he hadn't swallowed that many and we were pretty sure he didn't swallow any of them because of the bad taste. Poor kid, we took him blueberry picking this summer, so he probably thought they were blueberries then tasted them and was like what is this! lol. They told us to just watch him and he may have an upset stomach, etc. Luckily my baby was fine! He didn't get sick or anything thank the lord. Needless to say Jon found the bush and dug that sucker up and threw it away!
